Wind Augmentation and Purifying Unit : Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR- NEERI) develops An Induced Air Draft System to improve the air quality at urban intersections, Wind Augmentation and purifying Unit (WAYU).
We equipped the device with ultraviolet lamps and a catalyst-based system to remove poisonous gases such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Hydrocarbons (HCs) and carbon monoxide. This device works primarily on two principles:
I. Wind Generation for dilution of Air Pollutants
II. Active Pollutants Removal
It has indigenously developed a device that can purify the air in an area of 500-meter square.
We carried a study of 18 megacities out based on air quality. Three criteria pollutants viz., total suspended particles (TSP), Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were considered and based on which multi-pollutant index (MPI) was calculated to rank each city. Out of 18 megacities considered, five were having “fair” air quality while 13 had “poor” (Gurjar et al., 2008).
The traffic junctions in India are typically characterized by the existence of buildings with commercial spaces along with complex situations of roadside eateries and retail outlets of other items of daily use. In the road's vicinity, it leads to high exposure of persons to the pollutants emitted by the vehicles.

According to national ambient air quality standards and CPCB, WAYU can reduce pollutants of PM2.5 up to 45% and PM 10 up to 50% (Jointly confirmed by CPCB and NEERI). Along with that it purifies many poisonous gasses such as NO2, CO and hydrocarbons.
